I am a PhD student in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, where I am advised by Dr. Jianping Pan. I obtained my MSc in Computer Science from the same university in 2023, and BEng in Computer Science and Technology from Zhejiang Gongshang University, China in 2017. Since 2017, I spent four years working as a backend software engineer in startup companies in Shanghai and Hangzhou. My current research interests are primarily centered around various aspects of computer networking protocols and applications. This includes measuring the performance of low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellite networks (e.g., SpaceX Starlink and Eutelsat OneWeb), exploring adaptive video streaming and new protocols such as multipath QUIC.
1. Measuring Low-Earth-Orbit Satellite Networks (September 2022 - Present)

We conducted a comprehensive study of Starlink access, core, and global backbone networks.
We open-sourced the first comprehensive LEO satellite network measurement dataset, named LENS.
It includes the collected latency traces from more than 25 Starlink user terminals (UTs/dishes) across five
continents for inside-out measurements, covering the latency performance from the dish to ground station
gateways at the associated user "home PoP". With outside-in measurements and the help of the RIPE Atlas
platform, along with crowdsourced traceroute results by Starlink community users on Reddit,
we helped the community to map the first near-complete unofficial Starlink global backbone map.
Additionally, our research on Starlink's IPv6
deployment, leveraging a custom target generation mechanism, has successfully identified over 5.5 million
Starlink user routers out of approximately 8 million users as reported by Starlink. This approach significantly
enhanced the capability of outside-in active measurements, overcoming the limitations posed by IPv4 CGNAT,
where only about 60,000 business Starlink users have reserved public IPv4 addresses.
Most recently, we are comparing the performance of Starlink and OneWeb at different locations around the world
given their different technologies, LEO parameters,
and targeted customers, and correlating UT, communicating satellites and landing ground stations without UT
revealing such information to improve the handover performance and behaviors.
2. PolarLink (January 2026 -
Present)

PolarLink is a technology pilot project that will develop, launch, and operate a Canadian CubeSat to evaluate how
commercial LEO constellations can be integrated into a resilient, high-bandwidth, low-latency
national communications backbone for Canada, especially in the Canadian Arctic. The PolarLink project is funded by
the
Defence Research and
Development Canada (DRDC) SpaceLEO initiative, and led by the
University of Victoria Centre for Aerospace Research (CfAR).
1. Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) Satellite Network Testbed

Funded by the NSERC Research Tools and Instruments (RTI) Grant and in partnership with external
collaborators worldwide, we have developed the largest research testbed for LEO satellite networks, comprising over
25 Starlink and OneWeb user terminals globally in five continents. With additional sponsorship from the Digital Research Alliance of Canada for computing and
storage infrastructure, we are building a distributed research platform open for network researchers worldwide. We
having been releasing open-source measurement datasets at https://github.com/clarkzjw/LENS.

The unofficial Starlink GeoIP Map is a visualization of the planned naming and addressing scheme of the Starlink
ISP, representing the association between user IP and Starlink's point-of-presence (PoP).

3. Starlink gRPC protobuf API for Golang
